Heritage of Port Cities

Speaker: Desmond Hok-Man Sham (PhD Candidate, Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London)

Date: 24 January 2014 (Friday)

Time: 7:30-9:30pm

Venue: CD306, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

(Colonial) port cities are multiethnic, multicultural, hybridized spaces which experience alternative, vernacular modernities. Histories of the port cities are often embedded in the built heritage and urban landscapes. This presentation will discuss how postcolonial societies of Hong Kong, Singapore and Penang deal with the heritage of port cities. It is not simply a question of whether the heritage of port cities are preserved or demolished. Even they are preserved, it does not mean that the complexity of histories embedded in the built heritage is actively engaged. The digging up of histories embedded in the heritage of port cities can provide possibilities for one to understand the past, to reflect upon history, space and subjectivity. This may also be one of the starting points of an actual decolonizing project.
